"The Chronicles of a Country Parish" - A village appraisal of Sulgrave published in 1995

CONCLUSION
(Back to Chapter 5 Index)

The twenty-year period from 1961 to 1981 saw a relatively static population in Sulgrave, but one where standards of living increased greatly. The number of households did not increase despite the building of several retirement bungalows. This was mainly because many dwellings were demolished to make way for these developments.

The decade from 1981 to 1991 saw a dramatic increase of 16% in population and 22% in households, the latter was mainly in "infill" developments that became a major feature of the expansion of Sulgrave in this period.

This has been a classic example of counter urbanisation. Rural areas like Sulgrave have become attractive to retired people and commuters alike as personal mobilitiy and road links have improved considerably. These facts added to the lower cost of living in rural areas and the preference of lower-density rural living has all brought many new people to Sulgrave over the last decade. This has inevitably led to a change in the socio-economic makeup of the population, and has greatly affected the physical and visual aspects of the village itself.
