MAMMALS
(Back to Chapter 4 Index)

The following list of mammals which are known to be resident in the parish is probably not complete, as the smaller species are not so obvious (it's been a case of "See what the cat's brought in!")

Hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus)
Common Shrew (Sorex araneus)
Pygmy Shrew (Sorex minutus)
Mole (Talpa europaea)
Rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus)
Brown hare (Lepus capensis)
Grey Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis)
Short-tailed Vole (Microtus agrestis)
Bat (unidentified species)
Wood Mouse (Sylvaemus sylvaticus)
House Mouse (Mus musculus)
Brown Rat (Rattus norvegicus)
Fox (Vulpes vulpes)
Badger (Meles meles)
Stoat (Mustela erminea)
Weasel (Mustela nivalis)

These, apart from the now-well-established grey squirrel, are all natives, but ther have been sightings of a couple of foreigners: muntjac (Muntiacus muntjac), a small baarking deer, originally from Chjina and probably descended from those which escaped from Woburn; and European mink (Lutreola lutreola), another escaper, from fur farms, and now a frequenter of streams and voracious eater of fish.
